Was I prepared to follow through on this oath?Īs soon as he had administered the Oath of Enlistment, I immediately felt a strong sense of patriotism. I thought to myself this is not a joke - this is real. It seemed as if time stood still, because I mentally paused and reflected on the words I was repeating. We raised our right hands, as he asked us to, and began to recite after him. At this point, I had never heard the words so I had no idea as to what we were going to say. An officer entered and said he was going to administer the Oath of Enlistment to all of us. I stood in a room with at least 40 or 50 other people, all standing at what we called "attention," facing the front of the room. I was at Fort Jackson, South Carolina going through my preparations to enlist in the U.S. I distinctly remember being administered the oath 28 years ago, almost as if it was just yesterday. While it is part of the ceremony it is far more than a simple gesture or a formality to get through before the document signing if reenlisting or the refreshments after the ceremony. I think some view it as a ceremonial gesture. This is a joyous occasion, either we are continuing our service or maybe receiving our next promotion. We often reaffirm the oath during reenlistments for enlisted members and during promotions for enlisted and officers. But I wonder if some of us who say those words that form the oath fully embrace what they mean and do we let them guide our military service. It forms the bedrock of what we stand for and are willing to fight for. Immediately I thought to myself, the oath is a major part of who we are in the military. The other day I was reviewing Air Force Instruction 1-1, Air Force Standards, when I came across the Oath of Enlistment. ![]()

![]() ![]() Muons were discovered in 1936 by Carl Anderson and Seth Neddermeyer, who were performing experiments with cosmic rays from deep space (Anderson had already discovered the electron's anti-particle, the positron, four years earlier). (Image credit: Photo12/Universal Images Group via Getty Images) He is photographed here in the Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK. Many chemical processes are related to the presence of these electrons in atoms.īritish physicist Joseph John Thomson discovered the electron in 1897. Positive charges on the protons and the negative charges on the electrons cancel out to create an electrically neutral atom. An atom will have the same number of electrons as it does protons, ensuring that the Electrons are important components of atoms, orbiting the nucleus of an atom composed of protons and neutrons. An electron has a rest mass energy of 0.511 MeV (Mega electron-Volt) (which equates to 9.1 x 10^–31 kilograms). The electron was the first lepton to be discovered, in 1897 by the British physicist Joseph John Thomson. It turned out that they weren't vanishing, but oscillating into muon and tau neutrinos on their way here. Neutrino oscillations are the solution to the mystery of the solar neutrino problem, where it seemed that only a third of the expected number of electron neutrinos from the sun were reaching Earth. This is referred to as neutrino oscillation and is described by physicists in Stanford University's Neutrino Group. However, once an anti-electron neutrino is produced from the decay of a neutron, the neutrino itself can change flavor into a muon or tau neutrino. So, a neutron could never decay and produce an electron and an anti-muon neutrino, because they belong to different families of leptons. The Lepton Number of an electron is 1, and the Lepton Number of an anti-neutrino is –1, hence they cancel and conserve the overall Lepton Number of the reaction.Ĭomplicating things are the three families of leptons (electron and electron neutrinos, muons and muon neutrinos, and tau particles and tau neutrinos) and the rules of Lepton Numbers say they can't be mixed and matched. Therefore its decay products must also add up to a Lepton Number of 0. A neutron is a baryon, not a lepton, so its Lepton Number is 0. First of all, it conserves a property known as the Lepton Number, which is defined by physicists at Georgia State University as the number of leptons minus the number of anti-leptons. This decay reaction demonstrates a couple of the fundamental properties of leptons. ![]() Tachyons: Facts about these faster-than-light particles ![]() Leptons and their corresponding neutrinos have a lepton number of 1, while antileptons and lepton antineutrinos have a lepton number of -1.- Higgs boson: The 'God Particle' explained A quantum number can only take integer values.Īll quarks have a baryon number of \dfrac\right). If you have a photo with one object that is very bright and the rest is darker or neutral colors, color splashing the bright part won’t make much of a difference. Think of softness as a feathering effect and the lower this setting, the stronger the edge of the brush stroke will be.When choosing a photo to color splash, here are my guidelines for getting the best results: choose a photo that has a lot of bright colors across the entire photo and make sure the part of the photo you color splash takes up a large percentage of the photo. Should you see a lot of bleeding over into areas you don't want to be affected, remember to not only reduce the brush size but also the softness. The brush is responsive and accurate, but it does take a little practice to get the hang of things. The interface is simple and easy to use and I do like the filter options.
